Disturbances: Adapting to the era Twitter
"Really pleased to be able to publish this post from Cisco's Jeremy the use of Twitter by the police, with specific reference to the recent disturbances in . The older we get, however, the more likely we are to notice a single tree before to adapt, didn't improve as much when asked to vary their learned routine . "
With social media is speeding up the news cycle brutal and spreading rumors about bank failures and turmoil at the speed of light, politicians, companies and governments have no choice but to adapt quickly.
British Prime Minister, David Cameron, threatened to block temporarily platforms such as BlackBerry messaging service used to coordinate the looting and rioting, but the experience of the ‘ Arab spring ‘suggests that this strategy may be doomed to failure.
For some of the world’s most powerful countries, the challenge could hardly be greater. The unrest of recent days in Britain became unruly parts of London and other cities and raised serious questions about the sustainability of the government’s austerity strategy.
Dangerous precedents
The overthrow of the presidents of Tunisia and Egypt by revolution driven by social media clearly alarmed China’s leaders, who created a sophisticated system of “authoritarian network” to control the debate on the Internet and avoid a similar fate .
But even some veteran security specialists warn that these resources not only doomed to failure but that would jeopardize the authority of those who apply. The decision of the deposed President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt to disconnect the Internet , they say, only made ??more people into the streets.
“The use of social media on the protests seems to be a game-changing factor, but any attempt to impose state control (…) seem destined to fail,” says the former senior British intelligence agency of signals GHCQ, John Bassett.
“Ultimately, it is likely that those governments who try to use the model to the old control fail, losing legitimacy and respect in the eyes of their populations,” he adds.
Monitor the network for relevant intelligence is useful, says Bassett, as individuals and communities to encourage individuals to report potentially problematic.
Adapting to the new era
But most communication experts agree that what we really have to do is learning institutions to use these platforms to take the initiative. And they have to learn quickly. Sapriel Caroline, a consulting firm that advises multinational companies in crisis, says the key is for companies to use platforms such as Twitter to get involved quickly when there is a problem and avoid losing control.
“In these times, the crises of all kinds are triggered and gaining momentum at the speed of light,” said Sapriel. “There is no doubt that to tell your side of the story (…) social media is the way.”
The group News Corp Rupert Murdoch discovered to his dismay last month. A Twitter campaign to convince advertisers to withdraw advertising from the weekly News of the World, beaten by a scandal gained momentum so fast that the paper closed in a few days. Accusations that the newspaper had punctured mailboxes of mobile phones and paid police for information not only caused lasting damage to the reputation of News Corp, but much of British institutions, which was too close to the tycoon Murdoch.
With financial markets more volatile than ever, that is something that banks in particular will have to consider. This week, as during the 2008 financial crisis, as bank shares l ranged wildly based on rumors that the institutions themselves were often too slow to deny.
There is also a learning curve that is causing problems for some bodies of the British police, especially in London.
Other bodies such as police Manchester , were much quicker to adopt Twitter to interact with citizens, uploading images of looters Facebook for people to identify them. “Many criminals caught on CCTV (closed circuit television): We identify and we’ll go for you,” police said in a message.
Anonymous threat to Cameron
A sample of the error involved in repressive measures against this type of situation is the response received from the governments that have been exercised. The collective knowledge ‘hacktivist’ Anonymous has taken action against all countries that have taken some kind of political repression, and not going to be less in the British case.
Facing threats from the Prime Minister that they were thinking Cameron block social networks, the group has warned that doing so will be no retaliation. Through his Twitter account @ GroupAnon , hackers have advised David Cameron will be dire consequences. A threat that this group tends to always comply.
